Areas we cover around Boise

A door off its track is the fault we are called out for most often in Boise, and it is the one homeowners least expect. Nothing wears visibly, nothing sounds wrong, and then one morning the door will not lift and the car is shut in. Around North End and East End we see it concentrated in North End bungalows with alley garages and newer foothill builds, where dry cold that stiffens grease and cracks weather seals.

The door hangs from rollers that run in a steel channel, and the channel holds the door flat against the opening. If one roller leaves the channel, that corner of the door drops, the panel twists, and the rollers above and below it are levered out too. What starts as one roller becomes a door hanging at an angle in minutes.

Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna and the rest of Ada County are all inside the normal radius. The visit costs nothing, the written estimate costs nothing, and the price is fixed before a tool comes out.

What you are probably seeing

This is the fault you can diagnose from the driveway. The two sides of the door are at different heights. There is daylight along one edge that was not there before. The door moves partway and then binds, or grinds instead of rolling, and you can usually see the roller sitting proud of its channel.

If any of that matches, a technician can diagnose it on site in about ten minutes. We do not guess at it down the phone, and we do not charge to look.

What people get told that is not true

It came off because the track is old.

Track does not fail with age. Something caused it - a seized roller, a slipped cable drum, a loose bracket, or an impact. If the cause is not found the door comes off again within weeks, which is why we look for it rather than just reseating the rollers.

You can push it back on yourself.

The door is still connected to a loaded counterbalance while it is off the track. Levering a panel back into the channel with the spring still wound is how people get hurt, and how a realignment turns into a panel replacement.

Bent track can be hammered straight.

It can be made to look straight. It will not run true, and the rollers will keep leaving it. A vertical track section is an inexpensive part and it gets replaced.

None of that is unique to Boise. It is simply what happens when a door is quoted over the phone by somebody who has not seen it, and it is the reason we do not give prices before a technician has stood in front of the door.

Before you call: four things you can look at

None of this involves touching anything under tension, and all of it makes the phone call shorter and the estimate more accurate. Two minutes in the garage with the door down is enough.

  1. Stand back and look at both sidesThe two edges of the door should be level and the same distance from each track. If one corner is lower, that is where the roller has come out.
  2. Check what it might have hitA bin, a bike, a bumper. Knowing what caused it saves the technician time and tells us whether to bring panel hardware.
  3. Do not press the button againThis is the important one. Running the opener on a derailed door is what turns a realignment into a panel replacement.
  4. Look for daylightA gap along one side that was not there yesterday means the door is no longer sitting flat in the opening.

Whatever you find, do not try to correct it. The value is in the description you give us, not in the repair - a technician arriving in Boise who already knows what failed arrives with the right part on the van.

Everything in the price, itemised

Two quotes for the same job in Boise can differ by a lot and both be honest, because they are not for the same work. This is what ours includes as standard.

  1. Full cycle test and re-balance before we leave.
  2. The floor and the door's closing line checked, in case the door came off because it was meeting something.
  3. Top fixture and the top roller carriers inspected - the first thing to bend and the easiest to miss.
  4. The door supported and its weight taken off the track before anything is moved.
  5. Horizontal track and the rear hangers checked, because a derailment usually loosens them and nobody looks up.
  6. Rollers reseated in the channel section by section, from the bottom up.

None of that is optional or extra. It is what the job is, and it is why we would rather quote in writing on site than call out a number over the phone.

Brands we work on

Garage door mechanisms are far more alike than the badges suggest, and the parts that fail are common across brands. These are the ones we see most in Boise.

BrandNotes
Overhead Door / RaynorStandard torsion hardware on the residential lines - nothing unusual to source.
Wayne DaltonThe TorqueMaster counterbalance is a spring inside the tube rather than on it, and it needs its own tools and its own parts. We carry them.
Sommer / MarantecLess common here, direct-drive heads, and the parts have to be ordered - so we confirm the model before the van is loaded.
GenieScrew-drive and belt-drive heads. Intellicode remotes and carriage assemblies are the usual failure points, and both are parts rather than a reason to change the opener.
Chamberlain myQWi-Fi hubs and the app side fail more often than the mechanics do. Usually a re-pair rather than a replacement.
AmarrSections and hardware are widely available and the tracking is standard, which keeps repair costs sensible.

Not listed is not a problem. Residential doors are overwhelmingly standard hardware, and the handful that are not are identified from the model number in about ten seconds on the phone.

Where we work in Boise

We cover the whole of Boise, including North End, East End, Bench, Southeast Boise, Harris Ranch, and the towns around it - Meridian, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna.

Just outside that list is still worth a call. Most of Ada County is inside the normal radius, and we will tell you honestly on the phone if you are not rather than booking you in and cancelling later.

The track and roller assembly, explained properly

Tracks do not wear out on their own. They come out of alignment because something happened - a car touched the door, a cable let go on one side, a roller seized and dragged, or the brackets loosened over years of vibration until the track drifted.

Done properly, the door's weight comes off the track first with proper support. Then the rollers are seated section by section from the bottom, every hinge is checked for the elongated holes that a derailment leaves behind, and the vertical track is trued against a level rather than by eye. Bent sections are replaced; a track that has been hammered back into shape will let the door off again.

Nine times out of ten there is a root cause behind the derailment, and if it is not found the door comes off again. A seized roller, a loose bracket or a cable drum that has slipped are the usual three, and the visit is not finished until we have identified which one it was.

The five things the estimate depends on

Nothing here is an upsell. Each one genuinely changes what the work involves, and each one has to be looked at rather than assumed.

FactorWhy it matters
Jamb conditionTrack is only as straight as what it is bolted to. Rotten jambs get dealt with before the track goes back on.
How far it wentOne roller out of the channel is a realignment. A door hanging at an angle with three panels twisted is a different job.
The underlying causeA seized roller or a slipped drum has to be dealt with or the door derails again - and that part is often the smaller half of the bill.
Rear hanger conditionHorizontal track hung from loosened rear brackets will drop the door again a month later.
Track conditionBent vertical sections are replaced. Straightening them is a repair that fails again.

The technician goes through whichever of those apply to your door before writing the estimate, so the number you are given is the number on the invoice.

Boise weather, and what it costs you

Dry cold that stiffens grease and cracks weather seals. Put that against a mechanism made of wound steel, galvanized cable and nylon bearings and the outcome is not mysterious.

Corrosion is the quiet one. A spring that has picked up surface rust has lost section where the rust sits, and stress concentrates exactly there. It does not squeak or warn you - it simply fails earlier than its cycle count says it should.

Temperature is the loud one. Steel is a little less forgiving cold than warm, so a spring at the end of its life picks the coldest morning of the month to go. That is why the phone in Ada County rings hardest before eight.

Neither is a reason to buy a different door. It is a reason to service the one you have before the season that will break it, and to size the replacement parts for Boise rather than for a catalog.

What Boise does to each part

Dry cold that stiffens grease and cracks weather seals. Split by component, the effect is not evenly distributed:

PartWhat the local climate does to it
Torsion springSurface corrosion removes section, stress concentrates there, and the spring fails short of its cycle rating.
Lift cablesRust starts at the bottom bracket end, closest to the floor, and works up the lay of the wire.
RollersGrit and moisture together destroy unsealed bearings; sealed nylon rollers are largely immune.
Bottom sealHardens, cracks, and stops sealing - after which the weather is inside the garage rather than outside it.
OpenerSuffers indirectly. Every one of the above makes the door heavier to move, and the nylon drive gear is what pays for it.

None of it is exotic and none of it needs a special product. It needs looking at twice a year, which is the part most people in Boise skip.

How the visit works

  1. You call and describe itYou speak to somebody who can book the van, not a call center that sells the job on. Tell us what the door is doing and we will tell you what it is likely to be.
  2. You get a two-hour windowNot a day, and not 'sometime this afternoon'. The technician calls before setting off.
  3. Diagnosis on the door, price in writingThe fault is confirmed on the door rather than guessed at, and the price is written down before anything is touched.
  4. Fixed on the first visit, usuallyMost off-track garage door repair work is finished the same day because the common parts are already on the van.
  5. Tested, balanced, warrantedThe door is cycled, balanced by hand at the halfway point, and the safety reversal is tested before we leave.

Get a straight answer in three minutes

Tell us what the door is doing, what it sounds like and roughly how old it is. That is normally enough to know what has failed and what the van needs to bring.

The visit is free, the written estimate is free, and there is nothing to pay if you decide against it. Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna and the rest of Ada County.
