Most garage door cable and roller repair calls we take in Boise start the same way - the door moved fine yesterday. That is normal. The components that fail are load-bearing, and load-bearing parts fail suddenly rather than gradually. Two cables run from the bottom brackets, up the sides, and wind onto drums at each end of the torsion shaft. They are what actually carries the door's weight to the spring. A cable about to fail tells you first. Look along its length for broken strands standing out from the lay of the wire, and check whether one side has gone slack while the other is taut. If the door has begun to sit crooked, the cable has already slipped a drum.

Why the lift cable and roller set fails

Lift cables are galvanized steel and they last as long as the surface stays intact. The bottom bracket end sits closest to the damp floor, so that is where they rust, and that is where they fray first. Rollers are a shorter story: builder-grade plastic rollers with no bearings are done in five to seven years.

Cables are replaced in pairs, because they have worn the same amount and the drums have to be set equally or the door will never sit level. Nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings are the upgrade worth having - quieter, and they outlast the plastic ones several times over.

A roller that has seized takes the track with it, so a roller replacement that is left too long turns into a track repair. If we are already there for a cable, changing the rollers at the same time costs the parts and almost no extra labor.

What happens if it is left

People put this off, and it is worth being straight about where that goes. None of the following is unusual - it is the ordinary sequence, and we see it in Boise every week.

Please do not keep using it

The bottom bracket the cable attaches to is under the full spring load. It is the single most dangerous bolt on the door and it is marked as such on most doors for that reason. Loosening it without unloading the spring first releases the whole counterbalance at once.

There is no safe way to keep using it, and there is no prize for trying. Load that should be on the counterbalance goes somewhere else instead - hinges, brackets, the opener's gear - and each of those is a bigger job than the part that actually failed.

If the car has to come out, do it with the door fully down and the opener released. A partly-raised door with no working spring will finish the journey by itself.

You do not need tools and you do not need to touch anything under tension. Stand in the garage with the door shut and look at four things.

The springs above the door: any orange-brown bloom on the coils is surface rust, and surface rust is where the spring will eventually break. The gap in a broken spring is obvious once you know to look for it.

The cables running down each side: follow them to the bottom brackets and look for strands standing proud of the lay of the wire. Frayed is the warning; snapped is the emergency.

The rollers: spin one with a finger. It should turn freely. A roller that will not turn is dragging in the track and taking the track with it.

And the balance: release the opener with the door down, lift by hand to waist height, and let go. It should stay. Anything else means the counterbalance needs setting.
